The 2011 Show – Key facts from the Chairman’s closing speach at the Show

  • we have now had 34 allotment shows, the first was in 1978 held at the village primary school. I do not have the show schedule for the very first show in 1978 but I do have every one from 1979. At the start there were just 57 classes.
  • the show has grown steadily over the years. The number of classes has increased, likewise the number of entries. Your support has seen the number of entries gradually increase and at this show you have entered 704 exhibits, an all time record.
  • these exhibits were staged by 84 of you, most of you here this afternoon. Thank you all so much for supporting the show. I know it’s hard work but I hope you will continue your support for next year.
  • inspite of the weather the entries in the vegetable classes have increased, especially the Capel Residents section.
  • last year the floral section almost doubled in size and I am pleased to see that again the floral display looks magnificent.
  • the cookery classes were very popular this year with a big increase in the number of entries.
  • the judges were kept very busy on Saturday morning as were the stewards in judging all the exhibits. The standard is very high and at times the judges found it difficult to choose just first, second and third places from so many entries.
  • a vote of thanks must go to the judges for giving us their time and expertise.
  • our sponsors continue to support us financially. Please look at the list of sponsors in the show schedule and give them your support.
  • the show does cost money to stage and with the support of the sponsors and your support in buying draw tickets and trying to win a prize on the card game all helps financially.
  • it goes without saying that a lot of hard work goes into creating the show each year. We will start work on organising next years show immediately after this one has finished.
  • the show would not be a success without the work put in by the members of the Show Team together with all the many volunteer helpers enlisted over the weekend.
  • thank you all so much.
  • i hope you agree that the 2011 show has been successful and with your continued support we hope that we can continue growing ready for 2012.
  • i would now like to welcome our president Steve Baker and ask him to present the prizes.
