Garden News - June 2012

GUIDE TO GARDENING IN JUNE

Hoe weekly to keep weeds at bay or apply Weedol (80p. a sachet) or Bio Glyphosate (350ml £4.90). Scatter slug pellets (500g £1.50). Rake in 4oz sq. yd. Growmore (5kg £4) or Chicken Pellets (20kg £8.90) prior to sowing or planting. Kill weeds on paths, patios and drives (80p a sachet). Top-dress containers with 4mm grit (£4.60). Feed weekly with Maxicrop (£2.50 ltr) or Phostrogen (1 kg £3.20) or Solo’s at 10p each. Stock up with lump wood charcoal (11kg £8) for those impromptu barbecues.

Please remember there is a hose pipe ban in force. To support the effort to save water please water plants thoroughly with an open ended watering can, do not waste time & water by indiscriminate spraying by using a rose once seedlings have emerged. Seed potatoes will not need watering until July at the earliest.

THE VEG PLOT: - Plant cauliflower, cabbage, sprouts, broccoli, sweet corn, leeks & celery. Sow or plant runner beans to grow up 8' canes (35p) set in two rows 2 ½ to 3 feet apart, cross canes as low as 3 feet from the ground to allow the maximum number of beans to hang outwards and grow straight for easy picking and for the show bench. Tie in other canes at 45o and through the cross over point to strengthen the structure. Sow salad crops; french beans, carrots & swede. Plant marrows, courgettes & tomatoes inserting a pot in the ground beside each plant with the top at soil level. Watering & feeding via the pot will directly benefit the roots. Earth up potatoes. Harvest asparagus, new potatoes, carrots, peas & broad beans & Japanese onions. We carry a limited range of vegetable seed @ 70p & £1.10 a packet to supplement our autumn seed scheme. Thin seeds sown in May.

FRUIT: - Spray fruit trees which are affected by scab or codling moth (trap £4.50) and protect against plum moth (trap £5.70). Check for green fly and spray with Sprayday (200 ml £5.50) or Bug Killer (300ml £5.50). On soft fruit apply Derris (300g £2.20) ten days after flowering to protect against raspberry beetle (trap £12.50) and red spider mites. Protect fruit & plants from bird attacks with netting. 8m wide £1.80 per linier meter or 900mm wire netting folded to create a cloche (£1.35 per mtr.).

GREENHOUSE: - Ventilate, provide shade & maintain humidity. Water daily. Take softwood & semi-ripe cuttings. Insert into sandy compost (potting grit £4.60) in pots (from 3p). Sow hardy perennials. Full size rigid trays and gravel trays @ £1 & half size flexi's @ 10p are available. Support plants with 2' green canes (30p per 15). Control insect pests with Bug Gun (£2.40), Ultimate Bug Killer (400 ml £5.80) which is ideal for killing lily beetles. Plant tomato, cucumber, pepper & aubergines in 40ltr grow bags (£2.40). Feed weekly when fruits begin to swell with tomato feed (£2.50 per ltr.) Pinch out all but four side shoots on melon plants & stop these when they reach the corners of the cold frame. Hand pollinate (brushes 10p) when each shoot has a female flower. Keep the main stem dry.

FLOWERS: - Plant out half-hardy annuals. Tie in sweet peas to grow up 6' canes (25p). Cut back flowered heather's & mulch with peat (200ltr £11). Plant containers with summer bedding (75ltr Compost £4.50, 60ltr Horizon Peat Free compost £6 or 20 kg John Innes £3) incorporate slow release tablets @ 10p each or granules £3.20 for 1kg. Stake tall herbaceous plants using 4' canes at 20p & pea & bean netting at 30p a mtr. Mulch borders with chipped bark (80ltr £4.80).

LAWNS: - Mow weekly. Apply a feed to treat 73sq mtrs @ £4.50. Phostrogen Weed, Feed & Moss Killer 14kg bag at the bargain price of only £17 to treat 400sq m. or 5kg bag @ £6 ( stocks at this price are now extremely low) or Lawn weed killer, 350ml £3.40
