Plants Available at The Hut

A selection of vegetable and flower plants, together with bunches of flowers, are available from The Hut as and when stock permits.

June Gardening Tips

  • Hoe weekly to keep weeds under control, or apply Weedol or Bio Glyphosate where appropriate.
  • Scatter slug pellets selectively.
  • Rake in 4 oz per square yard of Growmore or Chicken Pellets before sowing or planting.
  • Kill weeds on paths and drives.
  • Top-dress containers with grit.
  • Feed plants weekly with Maxicrop or Phostrogen.
  • Stock up with lumpwood charcoal for summer barbecues.

Please use weedkillers, slug and snail controls, and insecticides carefully and selectively. Always avoid contamination of pets and wildlife. Non-chemical methods are often effective alternatives.

Water Conservation

Please help conserve water by watering thoroughly with an open-ended watering can. Avoid indiscriminate spraying once seedlings have emerged. Seed potatoes should not require watering until July at the earliest.

The Vegetable Plot

Plant Out

  • Cauliflower
  • Cabbage
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Broccoli
  • Sweetcorn
  • Leeks
  • Celery

Sow or Plant

  • Runner beans
  • French beans
  • Carrots
  • Swede
  • Salad crops

Runner beans should be grown up 8-foot canes arranged in two rows 2½–3 feet apart. Cross the canes approximately 3 feet above ground level to encourage straight beans that are easy to harvest and suitable for show exhibits. Additional canes should be tied at 45° through the crossover point to strengthen the structure.

Other Tasks

  • Plant marrows, courgettes and tomatoes.
  • Earth up potatoes.
  • Thin seedlings sown in May.

Harvest

  • Asparagus
  • New potatoes
  • Carrots
  • Peas
  • Broad beans
  • Japanese onions

Fruit

  • Protect fruit trees against codling moth and plum moth.
  • Check regularly for greenfly and treat as necessary.
  • On soft fruit, apply Py Powder ten days after flowering to protect against raspberry beetle and red spider mite.
  • Protect fruit from birds using suitable netting.

Greenhouse

  • Ventilate well, provide shade and maintain humidity.
  • Water daily during warm weather.
  • Take softwood and semi-ripe cuttings using rooting powder and sandy compost.

Available from The Hut

  • Full-size rigid trays
  • Gravel trays
  • Half-size Flexi trays

Planting

Plant tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and aubergines in 10–14 litre pots using multi-purpose, peat-free or John Innes compost.

Feeding

Feed weekly with tomato fertiliser once fruits begin to swell.

Melons

  • Pinch out all but four side shoots.
  • Stop shoots when they reach the frame corners, netting top or shelf edge.
  • Hand-pollinate when female flowers appear.
  • Keep the main stem dry.

Pest Control

Support plants with 2-foot green canes and control pests as required.

Flowers

  • Plant out half-hardy annuals.
  • Tie sweet peas to 6-foot canes.
  • Cut back flowered heathers and mulch.
  • Plant summer containers using multi-purpose, peat-free or John Innes compost with slow-release fertiliser.
  • Stake tall herbaceous plants with 4-foot canes and protective cane caps.
  • Mulch borders.

Lawns

  • Mow weekly.
  • Apply a granular or liquid lawn feed.
  • Weed, Feed & Moss Killer and Spring & Summer Feed are available from The Hut.
