CAPEL ALLOTMENTS ASSOCIATION'S GUIDE TO GARDENING IN OCTOBER

Throughout lock down, by having a strong relationship with our wholesalers, we were able to keep our members supplied with compost, feeds, salt, charcoal, bird food & garden sundries, plants, surplus fruit, veg and flowers. We continue to offer a free local delivery service to those unable to visit our stores hut. We have welcomed many new members and many existing members have rediscovered our exciting facilities. Joining now will give you membership through to the end of 2021 and you can take advantage of THIS year’s seed & potato schemes. (Potato scheme closes on 15th October)

Membership is just £5 a year and is open to both plot holders and non-plot holders alike, wherever you live. A visit to ‘THE HUT’ should easily recoup this investment when you take advantage of our special bulk buy prices. Always amazingly low prices. Download a form now from our web site.


VEG PLOT :- Pick frost tender crops, clear ground & get started on your winter digging incorporating well rotted manure, composted garden waste or mushroom compost. Plant spring cabbage & Japanese onion sets, also over wintering lettuce in ground enriched with Bonemeal (5kg £4) or 6X at £11 a bag. Sow lettuce under cloches.

FRUIT :- Apply grease bands (1.75m, £4.30) or fruit tree grease @ £4.70 a 200g tub, now. Cut back to the ground fruited raspberry, blackberry & tayberry canes & tie in new shoots. Take cuttings of red, white & black currents & gooseberries. Order trees & bushes.

GREENHOUSE :- Pick last of tomato, cucumber, pepper & aubergines. Empty greenhouse & wash down with Jeyes (300 ml £4.95) . Line with 1.5m wide bubble plastic (£2 a mtr.) Bring in all frost tender plants. Try sowing spring onions, raddish, carrots, mange tout and lettuce in large pots, transplant lettuce to bags of compost or large pots or under clouches when big enough.

FLOWERS :- Plant spring flowering bulbs in pots (75 ltr. multi-purpose compost £5.30, 50 ltr. Peat Free £6 or  25kg. john Innes £4) or outside as soon as space is available. Remove summer bedding and put in compost bin. Plant wallflowers &  sweet williams (bare root plants available at The Hut), pansy’s, viola & heather's by the 20th while the ground is still warm. Sow sweet peas. Mulch borders with bark chips @ £6.50 for 75ltr. Divide perennials.

LAWNS:- Re-seed worn areas (grass seed £4.20 per kg.) spray with an Iron Sulphate solution of 30g per litre of water per 5sqm of lawn to treat moss. Aerate & scarify with a wire rake. Apply a dressing of builders sharp sand at £2, an autumn feed which will toughen up the roots , 5Kg treats 70sq mtrs ( £5.50 ). Mow with blades set at medium height.

ALLOTMENT NEWS

AUTUMN WORK-IN & BKA AWARDS - The final work-in of the year starts at 9am on Sunday 18th October. Jobs will be allocated to accommodate social distancing. We have loads to do so if you can’t make the 18th please contact Dennis to help out at your convenience. Refreshments will be available, however if you feel more comfortable, you are more than welcome to bring your own. The presentation of the Trophy and Prize Giving for the Best Kept Allotment Competition will follow at 12.30.

SAVE ££££££££’s - AUTUMN SEED SCHEME - If you regularly buy vegetable and flower seeds from us you will know that this scheme can bring you huge savings on normal retail prices which can save you several ££££’s. Your seed potato orders need to be with us by the 15th October. THE HUT-winter closing - We remain open 10-12 noon on Saturdays throughout October until Saturday 31st for our members then you can follow the Online Sales format until we re-open on Saturday the 6th February 2021 for all your gardening requirements - Fleece at 30p a meter, Bubble plastic (£2), in fact our full range of garden products and other sundry items such as :- 25 kg  of Water softener salt for £8.50, Block Salt £5, 3 kg Wild Bird Seed £1.50 & 2 kg Pea Nuts £3.50 & 12kg of lump wood charcoal at £10 (for the winter hardy cooks)………..


Online Sales From "The Hut" - Preferably payment will be by Bank Transfer (BACS) to Capel St Mary Allotments Association, Lloyds Bank, Sort Code 30-94-55 Account Number 01298209 with your name in the reference box or by card or cash for those who do not use online banking.

  1. Members can place your order by email to hut.manager@capelallotments.co.uk stating the exact description of each item, the price, how many are required and the total price of the item. The total cost of the whole order must also be included. Please also include a contact number and your address and indicate how you wish to pay.

You will receive confirmation of your order by email and delivery information for members living in the local area.                                        


CULTIVATOR HIRE - A cultivator is available for hire for on site use only. The fee is £10 for the first 2 hours. To hire this equipment please give Dennis as much notice as possible or for any matters relating to the site please contact Dennis.
